Renal calculi, also known as kidney stones, are crystallized substances that are formed inside the urinary tract or the kidneys. If you have a kidney stone, you may experience the typical pain in your belly, sides and/or groin. It is also the common cause of blood in the urine. This condition is called nephrolithiasis while having stones in your urinary tract is called urolithiasis.

Once the symptoms of stones are known, there is way to determine who are the most at risk of getting kidney stones.

While no one is completely immune to kidney stones, age and eating habits do play a large factor. Some medications can increase the chance of kidney stones being formed.

People who are at risk of getting kidney stones often have a family history of getting kidney stones, with high levels of uric acid in their body. Pregnant women have a chance of getting kidney stones because of the lower capacity of the uterus to hold urine. Women who are expecting to give birth have elevated progesterone, a possible cause.

Not drinking enough water or having had kidney stones previously can also increase the likely hood of you getting one. The causes of kidney stones are different for each person but here is a short list of those at risk.

Kidney stones are caused by a lower volume of urine and a higher volume of stone forming particles in your kidneys or urinary tract. Other factors that contribute to the formation of kidney stones are an excess of chemicals like calcium and uric acid.

Make sure you are drinking enough liquids to avoid severe dehydration, as that is one of the common causes of kidney stones. Also the obstruction of urine or if you hold your urine in for too long will lead to the development of stones inside your body.

Another course of kidney stones is a UTI. Gout can lead to stone formation because of the increase of uric acid. Hypercalciuria is caused by very high levels of calcium inside your body which can lead to stone formation.

People who have undergone intestinal surgery for inflammatory bowel disease are also at risk of developing stones inside their bodies. And a poor diet that includes high intake of salt, too much meat, and heavy consumption of sugary foods can lead to the development of kidney stones inside your body.
