Lifestyle Often Affects Snoring

By Jason McDrarren

Many of the most common causes of snoring could be prevented by more healthy lifestyle choices. Many people don't even realize how bad their snoring problem is until their spouse or roommates inform them that it keeps them up all night. Unfortunately, it isn't just others that lose sleep over snoring. The snorer generally doesn't get a very restful night of sleep either.

Common Causes of Snoring

The causes of snoring are varied but most of them are related to how a person chooses to live. Many people snore because they eat too much and don't exercise enough. This can lead to obesity, which is one of the primary causes of snoring. Other lifestyle choices that affect snoring are: drinking too much alcohol, smoking cigarettes, or taking sleeping pills. The position in which one sleeps can affect snoring and so can nasal congestion.

Food Intake

For those that eat to much and/or exercise to little, weight could be a contributing factor to snoring. Being overweight, even just by ten pounds or so, is one of the common causes of snoring. A buildup of skin and fat around the neck often compresses the airway while we sleep and this can cause snoring. Luckily a reduction in body fat can easily remedy this problem- as well as provide other benefits.

Are You Drinking Too Much?

One of the other common causes of snoring is related to alcohol consumption. Alcohol can reduce the reaction time of muscles in the body. It also depresses much of the nervous system functioning, which can lead to the relaxation of muscles in the throat that aren't normally so relaxed. These symptoms of drinking are one of the causes of snoring. Luckily, this problem can be solved easily by either giving up alcohol altogether or by reducing alcohol intake enough to reduce snoring.

Orientation While Sleeping

The position we sleep is sometimes one of the causes of snoring. This is particularly true if you are a little bit overweight. Sleeping on the back is generally associated with snoring because the position causes the airways to be compressed. Often rolling onto one's side is enough to solve a snoring problem.

Nasal Problems

One of the most common causes of snoring is the result of nasal congestion. Sometimes this is the result of allergies or a head cold. However, smoking is another common cause of congestion. If you are a snorer and you smoke then quitting smoking could solve your problem. Most of these causes of snoring can be treated with a hot shower or over the counter medication.
